The Race (2000)
Thierry Geoffroy/Colonel

"In the truly topsy-turvy world, truth is an aspect of falsehood." This quote from Guy Debord opens Inka Schube’s essay (www.colonel.dk) on Thierry Geoffroy/Colonel, a French artist now living in Copenhagen. It is in this sense that Thierry Geoffroy/Colonel questions supposed givens of everyday life by turning them on their heads in often absurdly staged presentations. His TV clips produced for the DR 2 danish public television network between 1999 and 2002 were ranked among the top five in weekly viewer ratings. The artist exploits the popularity of the mass medium of television to initiate an anti-hierarchical discourse on society and its patterns of order. The Race (2000) documents preparations for a public pram-pushing race he organized as an "active immigrant". During the event, he appears in the clip along with another participant, a representative of the city government and the press.
