South of Heaven (2003)
Gardar Eide Einarsson

Sandwiched between the conformist utopias of the Scandinavian nation state and the mega-corporation, customers attending the opening of a new Ikea branch in Norway frustrate the expectations of rational social behaviour by bum rushing the carefully planned opening day bonanza. As the various authorities present look on in disbelief the queue turns into a mini riot and the soft modernist celebration turns into spontaneously self (un)organised chaos. The scene plays out in one of those nondescript parking lots that make up the main bulk of quasi-public space. Defined by mass produced non-design, wire mesh fences, uncomfortable benches, barriers and generic greenery these spaces become the stage for an ongoing, always evolving battle of interpretation and re-interpretation, where everyday politics are lived and a myriad of signals and insignia co-exis.
