P-r-o-x-y: The community that cannot be represented, 2009

p-r-o-x-y does not want to be perceived as a subject or a group but as a concept defined by a varying number of persons. Starting out from the assumption that community cannot be represented but has to happen, to become reality anew,  again and again, p-r-o-x-y makes this fundamental non-representability the center of their installation. In it a number of different objects play an important role evoking and facilitating various levels of action: the table invites the visitors to participate in the discussion, it connects the people and it separates them. Public space can no longer be imagined without livestream and observation cameras, media the permanent presence of which promises communication and being in connection with others but which creates an atmosphere of control and distance at the same time. They, in a sense, collide with the messily arranged stacks of wood that remind of a camp fire, being the very archetype of community. The installation, bringing together heterogeneous media and elements (images, videos, diagrams, drafts, the internet, texts, temporary inhabitants), is no passive entity. It becomes the model of an accidental accumulation eliminating the borderlines between the media, creating a space for a potential community. It will be the starting point of meetings, discussions, and collective actions held in the public space of Zurich, e.g. excursions to ritualized meetings or meetings held on the spur of the moment which, in turn, give shape to a community or define it, thus changing the installation within the exhibition as well as extending it.
