Heimo Lattner: Meeting again and again! or: Which song do we listen to now when we’re dying?, 2009

Many communities are formed because of expulsion and/or withdrawal from society, often new rules of the game are established, often they are simply imitations of the rituals of a society on a smaller level. Heimo Lattner’s radio play installation stages such a model of a bourgeois world on a smaller level. It presents a new version of Jean Genet’s play “The Balcony”, which re-enacts the power games of society in a brothel. The client may choose between the room of a judge, of a general, or of a bishop. Then a revolution breaks out, trying to shatter the present social order as well as the institution of the brothel which mirrors and supports it. Everything is geared toward the all-decisive appearance on the balcony of the palace of justice where the new order shall be established. Who is going to appear up there? “In the audio installation ‘Meeting again and again’, this drama about the power of pictures, respectively the representation of power, is counterbalanced  by the voice and by the story. This work does not use any kind of sound effects or atmospheric sounds, it is solely built upon the moment and the voices; spaces and realities are created in the temporary community of narrator and listener.  It initiates a role play staging the fragility of reality. Realities, at any moment, are realities constantly evolving by interaction. The installation, a more or less empty space, can, once you take a closer look, be perceived as a scenery taking up and re-writing the original function of space, i.e. to be some sort of storage room for props not required in the present exhibition.” (Heimo Lattner)
