Dort Zuhause (There at home)
video, 2006
Both of my Grisons grandmothers recount their experiences and sentiments in a foreign place. A foreign place that exists within the country’s borders. Also the language counts as a hindrance to seamlessly settle into a new place and to be able establish a social network.
As a Romanic speaking maid in Zurich or as a German speaking woman from Davos, who marries and settles down in Surselva, boundaries are set to the familiar order of how things work: to feel at home in a foreign place or to feel the foreignness in one’s own country.
