Living a Beautiful Life (2003)
DVD, English, 13:00 min

Imagine a life of the kind you once dreamed of as a child – a perfect life.

In a seemingly naive approach, Corinna Schnitt takes a literal view of popular longings and ordinary ideas about happiness and exposes them without mercy to our eyes and ears in quasi-documentary presentations. She shows a man and a woman, an attractive couple living in a stylish mansion on the hills overlooking Los Angeles. Speaking to the camera in alternation, they tell us that they have everything others can only wish for and are everything that others can only dream of being. Like Blade-Runner replicas, they specify all the ingredients of an extraordinarily beautiful life of the kind people, at least in the Western world, generally imagine. The viewer finds this exhaustive litany of total happiness almost unbearable and is additionally provoked by the contemplative mood of the well-composed scenes. And anyone who assumes that everything will simply explode in the end, as in Antonioni’s Zabriski Point, is bound to be disappointed. (...)
