"The specific character of another person’s physical self-expression is captured in the imitation of a gesture. A person’s physical nature and emotional world are experienced in the attempt to replicate his or her gestures. Gestural expression is internalized through mimesis."
(Gunter Gebauer/Christoph Wulf)

Social values and gender norms are inscribed in and expressed through body language and gestures. Male and female body languages are described as clearly distinct dialects. Marion Porten explores a gender-specific gesture in each of her two first films in the "Gestures" film series.

In the pilot film, The Beard Stroke / Sich über den Bart streichen an animated figure strokes his beard. The integrated "making-of" feature explains how the film was made. A narrator with a deep, male voice also reads quotes from popular literature on body language. The animated figures in Take off a Sweater / Sich den Pulli ausziehen perform several different variations of this everyday action.
