Songül Boyraz (Vienna/Istanbul)
Made in New York (2003)
Series of photos

While in New York, Songül Boyraz was struck by the diversity of original styles she encountered beyond the pale of mainstream and designer fashion. Proceeding from this observation, she chose four people as models: an artist wearing an elephant mask, a woman doing yoga, an extravagantly styled photo model and a pregnant woman. She first photographed her subjects in their own private living environments, then designed individual clothing for them, things that would express how she saw them. Her proposals were discussed and refined in dialogue with the models. She created a t-shirt with traces of studio work, a leather top, a skirt-and-blouse combination and a dress. Before photographing them again, Boyraz sought out places in the city where she could portray the four people in a manner that would reflect both her own personal impressions of and the relationships she had formed with them. This second series of photos presents her subjects in poses that relate to their clothing and the respective settings.
